There are just some friendships that time and distance can't touch. We spent the day with such a friend. It is sad when the younger kids need time to reacquaint themselves, maybe even remind each other of their names, but for the moms it is always like no time has passed at all.Kindred spirits, as Anne would say.
The kids swam and played in perfect happiness, while Christi and I chatted about a dozen or more topics, trying to squeeze it all in, in between various baby and little people interuptions. We talked bathing suits, swimming, chickens, dinners, budgeting, homeschooling, the military, diapers, and vacations. I am not quite sure we ever finished our thoughts on any subject, but then that's not surprising.Really, the topics weren't nearly as important as the time together.
The older girls chatted while holding babies on their hips and the big boys swam for hours and then talked on the deck. At one point we could see them demonstrating push-ups for each other. The little girls just played, and played, and played. Augustine was in heaven in their backyard with a swingset and tree house.
We could have stayed all night. Our parting words were of finding a way to vacation together sometime. The kids get along so well, as do the dads, and maybe, we could finish a whole conversation!
On the way home, we drove by the old townhouse. Katherine pointing out all the significant spots in the neighborhood: the sledding hill, the mailbox that was too far for her to walk to alone, the field where Charlie and the neighborhood kids played football. The younger kids listened with rapt attention as we shared that bit of family history. We brought home three new babies in that house, and left it when Elizabeth was only 10 days old. I loved that house, that neighborhood, and especially those dear, close friends. I have found a new home to love with new memories, a home that we have brought three more babies home to. I have found new friends, even a few kindred spirits. I can't begin to count the blessings I have been given over the years.
and on that happy thought I will end, sice Teresa just threw up in her bed! Making memories here!
