Little boys have a special way of looking at life that moms and big sisters don't always get right away. An example of this came last week. We had gone to daily Mass at a new church. This, of course, means that my already very talkative little people have that much more to talk about. I like to think the reason my little guys won't be quiet anywhere is that they are so interested in the world around them. Which is a sign of great intelligence, right? (I will admit that there is something to be said for intelligent and obedient quiet children. We're working on that.)
Anyway, we arrived early which meant they had time to look around and whisper to me before Mass began. It was a pretty church, especially given the fact that it is actually in a storefront. But they have done a good job of making it feel like a church. So, the children asked about the statues and the candles. Augustine is always interested in the Crucifix in any church we go into. He was asking me again about what happened to Jesus and why the bad men wanted to do that to Him. I explained it in four year terms and we moved on.
(Augustine, Thomas, and I actually missed the Mass because neither of them could stop talking but that would be another post all about my renewed efforts at child training!)
Later that afternoon is when Augustine stumped us. Out of the blue he asked if the bad guys in church lost. Well, I thought he was the only bad guy in church that day! ;-) Katherine and I were both trying to figure out who the bad guys were when it dawned on me. I asked him if he meant the bad guys who had killed Jesus. He said yes. I was then left with a rather difficult question to answer. I mean, what is the answer? For a little kid looking at the Crucifix, it kind of looks like they won. But they could only do what they did because God allowed it. We finally decided that they lost, because Jesus rose from the dead and opened up Heaven. I told him the bad guys are still around but that Jesus is stronger and we just need to ask for His help. Not sure Augustine took it all in, but he was happy to know that the bad guys lost. Just like on the A-Team!
I love little boys!
Here is Augustine playing dead!
